Zdzisław Beksiński

Zdzisław Beksiński (24 February 1929 – 21 February 2005) was a renowned Polish painter, photographer, and sculptor who is best known as a fantasy artist. Beksiński executed his paintings and drawings either in what he called a 'Baroque' or a 'Gothic' manner. The first style is dominated by representation, with the best-known examples coming from his 'fantastic realism' period when he painted disturbing images of a surrealistic, post-apocalyptic environment. The second style is more abstract, being dominated by form, and is typified by Beksiński's later paintings. Beksiński was murdered in 2005.

Arthur Rackham

Arthur Rackham was born September 19, 1867, in London, England. He studied at the Lambeth School of Art, was elected to membership in The Royal Watercolour Society and the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts, and became Master of the Art Workers' Guild. Books he illustrated included Rip van Winkle (1905), The Ingoldsby Legends (1906), Alice in Wonderland (1907), and many other children's books and classics throughout the years until his death in 1939. His last work, for The Wind in the Willows, was published posthumously. He won gold medals at Milan (1906) and Barcelona (1911), and his books and original art are now collected in many countries throughout the world.

Alphonse Maria Mucha

The world´s first Mucha Museum, dedicated to the life and work of the world-acclaimed Czech ART NOUVEAU artist Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), is housed in the Baroque Kaunický Palace in the very heart of Prague.

A selection of over 100 exhibits comprising paintings, photographs, charcoal drawings, pastels, lithographs and personal memorabilia provides a privileged view into the universe of the artist who is most widely known for the posters he executed for Sarah Bernhardt in the fashionable world of fin-de-siècle Paris.

Witkacy - [Z chwilą kiedy poezja wyzwoliła się...]

Z chwilą kiedy poezja wyzwoliła się powoli z utartych form rytmicznych i
przestała być szeregiem wypracowań na zadane tematy, jak również
bebechowo-wstrząsowym krzykiem, czy nawet rykiem na temat różnych
uczuć życiowych, otworzył się niezmiernie szeroki horyzont czystej formy,
podobnie jak to się stało w malarstwie przez pozwolenie sobie na dowolną
deformację świata zewnętrznego. Wprowadzenie życiowego i logicznego
bezsensu w zdania całe wzbogaca formę w sposób przrażający. Nawet
dadaiści, chcący absolutnie wylecieć po stycznej z orbity, tworzą formę i
tylko formę, mimo programowej bezsensowności, dopóki operują
wyrazami artykułowanymi. Cóż dopiero, jeśli wyrazy te połączone są ze
sobą w muzyczne całości i całe ich kompleksy, zdania, które otwierają
niezbadane obszary znaczeń leżących na granicach zupełnego, z punktu
widzenia życia, bezsensu, lub też wprost wewnątrz tej sfery, gdzie bezsens
życiowy zmienia się w najwyższy sens formalny. Nie wyrażają zdania te
nowych uczuć, których nie znali nasi przodkowie, jak to twierdzą niektórzy
teoretycy futuryzmu (co do uczuć, to jesteśmy w istocie bardzo podobni
do nich i między sobą i niezdolni do wytworzenia nowych), one wywołują w
nas tylko w    i n n y   s p o s ó b    metafizyczne uczucie, przez swoje
właściwości czysto formalne.

Gustav Klimt

(July 14, 1862 – February 6, 1918) was an Austrian Symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Art Nouveau (Vienna Secession) movement. His major works include paintings, murals, sketches, and other art objects, many of which are on display in the Vienna Secession gallery. Klimt's primary subject was the female body,^[1] and his works are marked by a frank eroticism--nowhere is this more apparent than in his numerous drawings in pencil (see Mulher sentada, below).^[2]

23rd International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno 2008

The International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno is the oldest graphic design event of its kind in the world and also the largest and most prestigious project undertaken by the Moravian Gallery in Brno.

Established in 1963, the primary organisers of the Biennial are the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the Moravian Gallery. On each ocassion, there are two subjects that are regularly alternate at the Biennial.

In 2008, for their 23rd exhibition, is dedicated to graphic design, illustration and typography that used in books, magazines, newspapers and digital media. In the 2010 Biennial, they will focus on corporate, informational and advertising graphics and posters.

Below are their 23rd biennial identity and some art works that I carefully selected from all the participants to display in here. A complete list of artists whose works aspire to the Grand Prix of the Brno Biennial 2008 is available on the Moravian Gallery website.
